Company Statement

Ballard Power Systems is recognized as a world leader in the design, development and manufacture of zero-emission proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells.
Ballard’s mission is to make fuel cells a commercial reality. By concentrating on what Ballard does best, fuel cells, we are able to leverage our automotive fuel cell technology for less demanding non-automotive applications.
Ballard® fuel cell technology is operating in demonstration programs around the world. Whether taking a fuel cell bus to work, driving a fuel cell car to meetings, or using a fuel cell cogeneration system to provide heat, hot water and electricity to a home, people around the world are experiencing, first hand, how Ballard has The Power to Change the World®.
Ballard Power Systems Inc. was founded in 1979 under the name Ballard Research Inc. to conduct research and development in high-energy lithium batteries.
In 1983, Ballard began developing proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. Proof-of-concept fuel cells followed beginning in 1989 and from 1992 to 1994, sub-scale and full-scale prototype systems were developed to demonstrate the technology.
These systems have evolved into pre-commercial prototypes and initial commercial products, proving the practicality of the Ballard® fuel cell. Fuel cells are widely viewed as viable alternatives to conventional power and generating technologies.
Ballard launched its first commercial fuel cell product, the Nexa™ power module, in 2001.
Today Ballard is recognized as the world leader in developing, manufacturing and marketing zero-emission PEM fuel cells. Ballard is also a Tier 1 automotive supplier of friction materials for power train components.

Operations and Technology

Ballard Power Systems is recognized as the world leader in the design, development, and manufacture of zero-emission proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Ballard offers a variety of fuel cell products to support customers’ power requirements for transportation, stationary, and portable applications. Working with its customers and partners, Ballard continues to improve its fuel cell technology to meet and exceed customer expectations.
Ballard’s renowned Mark902 has established a new standard for fuel cell performance, while also demonstrating its compatibility with a variety of auto manufacturers’ system requirements.
The new Mark9 SSL™ leverages the automotive technology into a scalable design offering power increments from 4 to 21 kilowatts to meet customer requirements for both motive and stationary power applications.
Ballard also offers a one kilowatt Mark1030 fuel cell for integration into a combined heat and power (cogeneration) system, currently being deployed in the Japanese residential market.
Designed primarily for backup power applications, the Mark1020 ACS leverages Ballard's air-cooled fuel cell technology expertise to deliver significant improvements over earlier product prototypes.
The 1.2 kilowatt Nexa® power module continues to be a quality product for integration into stationary or portable power generation applications, and is also offered as part of an education package to post-secondary institutions for training in fuel cell technology.
