Ceres Power is a high growth product development company founded in 2001 to commercially exploit revolutionary fuel cell technology originally developed within Imperial College during the preceding 10 years. The company combines significant industrial experience involving the commercialisation of high technology with world class research and development expertise.
Ceres Power's strength goes well beyond its technology heritage. We have combined highly talented development teams with solid business know-how and clear commercial focus. Our aim is to build a successful high growth business, offering world-beating power generation solutions tailored to the needs of the customer.
The company's underlying core technology was developed and incubated within Imperial College by a renowned founding group of fuel cell and materials experts.
The Company's vision is to ensure that at any time and in any place there is a continual supply of reliable power. Ceres aims to become the world's leading supplier of high quality, low cost fuel cells in every market we operate, creating benefits for our customers, employees, environment, partners and shareholders.
Fuel Cells
Fuel cells offer a better way of producing electricity and heat than traditional power generating products. Fuel cells are highly efficient, quiet and produce low emissions - making it possible for everyone to move to a more secure and sustainable energy world. Up until now the choice of fuel cells has been hampered by compromises. You have had to choose between complex, delicate systems that operate at extremely high temperatures or vulnerable low temperature systems that can only run on pure hydrogen.
Now there is a viable alternative.
Introducing a revolution in power generation
Ceres Power is proud to introduce a revolutionary fuel cell - the world's first commercial metal-supported solid oxide fuel cell operating at an intermediate temperature. It starts producing energy extremely quickly and is designed to work with a range of fuels, including LPG, natural gas, methanol, hydrogen and vehicle fuels. This combination of traits makes it ideally suited for mass market uses.
A fuel cell that offers durability, efficiency and fast response, and all at a lower cost.
Ceres is a product development company specialising in small scale distributed power generation using intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells. A single fuel cell is the basic building block of a fuel cell power generator; Ceres is developing low cost and robust fuel cells that will be combined into stacks capable of generating between 1kWe and 25kWe.
Markets & Products
Energy where you need it
The uses of this revolutionary fuel cell are incredibly diverse. They deliver power for almost any purpose that uses between 1 and 25 kW of electric power. At Ceres we are focussed on tailoring this new technology to fit the exact needs of our customers. Target applications include:
Domestic Combined Heat and Power (CHP)
Creating electricity and heat on-site in people's homes and businesses offers substantial efficiency savings when compared with traditional energy supplies. Using existing natural gas, oil and packaged gas distribution networks, millions of customers can benefit from lower energy bills, governments are helped in meeting their CO2 targets, and utilities can capture more value.
Remote Power Supply
Reliable, silent, and low-maintenance sources of power are highly attractive for remote applications where access to the electricity grid is impossible or uneconomic. Fuel cell products will service applications as diverse as telecommunication stations, farming co-operatives and residential dwellings. The fact that they work with a wide variety of fuels also means that you can use packaged fuels instead of needing to install a fixed supply.
Auxiliary Power Units (APU)
Small power units can be used as a secondary source of power for cars, trucks, containers and military applications. By removing the need for the main engine to provide power for the electrical systems it is freed up to deliver better performance and higher efficiency. The quiet operation, reduced cost, lower emissions and extended maintenance periods of the auxiliary power units make them a very attractive option.
Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS)
Even small fluctuations in power can have disastrous consequences for companies and institutions that depend on electronic equipment. Uninterrupted operation is paramount to financial, healthcare, telecommunications and computing sectors. Fuel cells can provide reliable power independently of the electricity grid ‚ doing away with the need for expensive back-up systems.
The Technology Behind The Power
What makes our fuel cells special is the unique combination of a practical operating temperature (around 550ƒC) and affordable materials. The cells are made from stainless steel components and thin ceramic coatings of CGO. These core elements are perfectly matched when it comes to thermal expansion. They are constructed in such a way as to make them modular for total flexibility using standard sealing technology. And best of all, they can be manufactured affordably and are extremely robust.
In short, Ceres Power fuel cell technology delivers incredibly practical, efficient and responsive power generation solutions.
