Zenergy’s Energy-Saving Technology Has Huge Addressable Markets

By Rue Swabey

High temperature superconductors (HTS) are a compelling energy saving technology. As HTS offer no electrical resistance below a certain temperature, there is no loss of energy in contrast to conventional conductors, namely copper. HTS wires have 100 times the power density of copper resulting in increased levels of power, greater reliability and reduced material usage. These qualities have led to HTS being dubbed the fibre-optics of power. The obstacle to the mass implementation of HTS has been price but the development of second generation (2G) HTS is reducing costs.

AIM-listed Zenergy Power is at the forefront of 2G HTS development.  Zenergy’s criterion in developing 2G HTS is to achieve the lowest cost wire which it believes will be achieved by using all chemical deposition. In addition, Zenergy is developing applications that use 1G HTS wire, which will be replaced by 2G wire once available in scale. Zenergy believes that its current addressable annual market is €14 billion.

Applications fall into three main categories: HTS induction...
