Company Statement

Zenergy Power plc is a global manufacturer and developer of innovative and practical high-temperature superconductor (“HTS”) applications.
Zenergy was specifically incorporated in July 2005 to unify three of the leading companies in HTS technologies Trithor GmbH (Germany), SC Power Systems Inc. (USA) and Australian Superconductor (Australia). Accordingly, the newly formed Zenergy Group is endowed with:

  • the benefits of in excess of € 40 million of govermental grants and investment
  • a strong patent portfolio, comprising over 90 patents
  • leading global expertise in HTS material science, electrical applications and cryogenic technologies
  • world-class management team with over 75 years of combined industry experience related to superconductivity
  • a compelling range of 1G HTS products that target viable billion dollar global markets
  • leading low cost 2G HTS Wire IP and potential products
  • strong relationships with leading utility and power companies

HTS Superconductors offer the opportunity to revolutionize the energy and industrial markets, and its first large scale commercial products include a HTS Fault Current Limiter which offers to revolutionize the electric power grid and a HTS induction heater. These products respond directly to the demand by large consumers of electricity for efficient, compact, environmentally friendly and cost effective solutions.

Superconductivity is Zenergy's foundation
Zenergy Power plc is a global group at the leading edge of Superconductivity R&D and product innovation.
Efficient devices using an electric wire that can transport electricity with practically no resistance delivering electronic devices with efficiencies capable of enabling mayor break throughs in energy distribution and renewable power generation.

Operations and Technology

Energy
Fault Current Limiters (FCL)
One of the major problems facing electricity utility companies is the threat of blackouts and other power grid instabilities resulting from ever increasing user demand and aging infrastructures.

FCLs have wide application throughout the entire electric grid. Demand for power quality and reliability have been rising steadily: well documented and more frequently occurring blackouts evidence the unremitting and heightening pressure being exerted on the grid. Utilities increasingly need technology solutions to improve reliability and efficiency of the grid.

Zenergy manufactures HTS fault current limiters (FCL) which definitively addresses this problem. An FCL is similar in design to a transformer, but can be used in an electric grid as an industrial scale surge protector. The Groups FCL offers power grid operators a capability which they have sought after for many years, namely, a key product which both maintains grid reliability and allows the costs of expanding the grid to be minimised. Zenergy’s FCL product is just now entering the market.

It is the first FCL that can deliver what the utilities need. Key features of Zenergy’s FCL include:

  • increased grid reliability;
  • reduced capital equipment costs;
  • protection of expensive downstream equipment from faults as it reacts almost; instantaneously – less than 1/4 a cycle;
  • easily employable - fits over the grid without any retrofitting;
    automatic reset;
  • potential saving of billions of dollars for utilities as they deploy Zenergy’s FCLs across their grids;
  • extensive IP and know-how.

Coils
Zenergy's product offering includes HTS coils made of its high performance BSCCO HTS wire. These coils are tailored to the specific needs of customers developing motors, generators and other magnet or power applications. Zenergy coils make HTS an extremely easy to handle product, thus lowering the entry barrier to HTS technology.

With these components, Zenergy Power offers clear cut competencies that are being put into the service of its customers.

HTS wires
Zenergy Power is well advanced in the development of new low cost production methods for the next generation of HTS wires. Significantly, Zenergy's superconducting material processes use only chemical deposition, avoiding systems which are costly and difficult to scale, such as the high vacuum deposition or pulsed laser operations, increasingly adopted by others.

As evidence of its success, Zenergy has fully developed and tested its superconductor wire process at the half meter scale and is currently scaling up to a pilot manufacturing scale batch process that will run 250 meter lengths in 2006, and subsequently scale to run a continuous manufacturing process in 2007. This innovative next-generation process promises to lower the cost of HTS production by a factor of ten to approximately half the cost of copper.

In connection with its development of Superconductors, Zenergy is progressing with new applications for its use. The most significant HTS applications which Zenergy is addressing in this regard are in electric infrastructure projects like wind and power generators, energy transmission cables, dynamic VAR compensators, in ship and industry motors.

Industry
Induction Heater
Large scale induction heaters are used worldwide in the manufacturing of copper, brass and aluminum. Induction heaters soften metal by using electrical energy to create an inductive current in the metal. This, in turn, heats the metal making it easier to work with.

Normal induction heaters are only 40% to 60% efficient. Zenergy’s HTS induction heaters increase efficiency to 90%. The Group's Induction Heater is just entering the market. Key features of the Company’s HTS induction heaters are:
  • more than 90% efficiency, substantially reducing operating cost and equal investment;
  • much smaller footprint;
  • allows for individual heating and reduces material losses during production breaks;
  • no need for auxiliary cooling;
  • full deployment of HTS induction heaters will save manufacturers billion of dollars wordwide;
  • head to significant reduction in carbon emissions.

Limodraw
Drawing without contact, drawing with the power of the electromagnetic force and drawing benches being as long as you like – are the main topics of the revolutionizing technology Trithor, a partner of SCP, has developed for Bültmann GmbH, the world leading manufacturer of equipment for semifinished product industry.

The technology is based on electromagnetic fields induced by a linear motor. In the so called LIMODRAW© device, magnets produce a travelling electro-magnetic wave acting as mechanical force on the tube, thus creating contactless motion of the work piece. High temperature superconducting magnets can provide increased fields and thus improve the systems economics further. Application areas are:
  • Copper Industry
  • Aluminium Industry
  • Brass Industry

Linear Motors
A linear motor is essentially an electric motor that has had its stator  "unrolled" so that instead of producing a torque (rotation) , it produces a linear force along its length.

Zenergy offers linear motors based on a polysoleniodal design for industry customers. Two different options are available, synchronous or asynchronous versions.

The synchronous version is characterized by high efficiency and compact size. Forces of up to 40kN are available combined with precise positioning.

The asynchronous design needs active cooling of actuator to deliver the same forces, but is better adapted to industrial use in demanding environments.

Currently forces of up to 10kN can be offered. The system provides easy to clean surfaces, easy to replace actuators with almost unlimited length. This reliable and simple system is particularly suitable for moving bridges and arms, pumps or displacers.

On demand, motors are delivered including inverter and programming.
