Growing energy solutions
New energy crops
D1 develops new energy crops into sustainable commercial fuels. We provide technology and services for the breeding, development, planting and harvesting of new varieties of commercial biofuel crops, focusing on alternative, sustainable feedstocks that are not subject to the same price pressures as food-grade crops.
Jatropha - a new energy crop
Jatropha curcas has the potential to become one of the world's key energy crops. Crude vegetable oil, extracted from the seeds of the jatropha plant, can be refined into high quality biodiesel.
Under optimum conditions jatropha seeds can yield up to 40% oil content. Crude jatropha oil is inedible and its price is not distorted by competing food uses.
Jatropha grows in tropical and subtropical regions in a band around the earth between latitudes 30 degrees north and south of the Equator. Jatropha is hardy and relatively drought resistant. Trees have a lifespan of up to 30 years. Jatropha grows on a wide range of land types, including non-arable, marginal and waste land, and need not compete with vital food crops for good agricultural land.
Seeds are crushed to produce oil for refining into biodiesel. The residual meal (seedcake) left after oil extraction is excellent organic fertiliser and can be burnt for power generation. D1 is now developing commercial technology for the removal of anti-nutritional compounds, which make jatropha an inedible plant, from the jatropha meal after oil extraction. If the compounds that make jatropha inedible can be removed, jatropha meal has the potential to be a valuable animal feed. Efficient use of byproducts ensures that jatropha growing and processing is economically viable and energy efficient.
Jatropha planting programme
Up to 31 March 2008, D1-BP Fuel Crops has planted or obtained rights to offtake from a total of 192,016 hectares of jatropha worldwide. Planting is concentrated in Southern Africa, India and South East Asia.
Managed plantations are those farms where land and labour is controlled by D1-BP Fuel Crops, either through its subsidiaries or joint venture partners. Under contract farming, the farmer plants his own trees on his own land. D1-BP Fuel Crops and its partners assist with the provision of seedlings and the arrangement of bank finance for planting, and offer a buyback of harvested grains with an offtake agreement, subject to a floor price and the achievement of agreed quality standards, and provide support and advice during cultivation, and monitor the condition of the crops. Seed and oil supply agreements are arm’s length supply contracts with third parties whereby D1-BP Fuel Crops, either directly or through joint venture partners, has offtake arrangements in place over future output from jatropha plantations which the third party is developing. D1-BP Fuel Crops has limited involvement in this planting and relies on third parties to measure and manage the crop effectively.
Global operations
D1 Oils plc is a biofuels technology company. We are building a global technology network that will turn alternative energy crops into sustainable fuels and delivers value from “earth-to-engine”.
We currently operate an international plant science programme that is leading in the commercial development of jatropha into a major source of sustainable biofuel. Our plant science operations are co-located with jatropha planting operations run by our joint venture with BP, D1-BP Fuel Crops Limited. D1-BP's key areas of operation are Southern Africa, India and South East Asia.
Africa
Our operations in Africa are concentrated on building our jatropha plant science programme and planting jatropha in key markets.
Our plant science programme has regional development centres in Cape Verde, off West Africa, in Zambia and in Swaziland.
D1-BP Fuel Crops is actively planting jatropha in Swaziland and Zambia, and also has planting in Madagascar.
India
India is a key location for jatropha planting. The Indian government has one of the most developed biodiesel promotion programmes in the world, and is encouraging the planting of jatropha as a biodiesel feedstock. The objectives of the programme include increasing fuel security, reclaiming waste and marginal land, and raising the living standards of rural communities.
D1’s first Indian joint venture, D1 Mohan Bio Oils Limited, was established with Mohan Breweries & Distilleries Ltd, a leading Indian brewer based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. D1 Mohan began planting jatropha in southern India on a contract farming model with financial support for farmers provided in the form of loan finance from Indian banks.
In 2006, D1 entered into an agreement with Williamson Magor & Co. Limited, part of the largest tea plantation group in India, to form a joint venture company to develop jatropha plantations with farmers in North East India.
We also have a number of jatropha seed purchase and oil supply agreements with Indian partners.
Our plant science operations in India are centred on our Regional Development Centre in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. We have established a national network of nurseries to produce seedlings for planting.
Our jatropha planting operations are now carried out by our joint venture with BP, D1-BP Fuel Crops Limited.
Asia Pacific
Our business in Asia Pacific is developing rapidly as we build relationships with partners in a number of key markets.
We have a number of jatropha contract farming and seed purchase agreements with companies in the region, in particular Indonesia, including a relationship with PT Astra Agro Lestari, part of the Jardine Matheson Group and the largest publicly-traded agribusiness in Indonesia to undertake a pilot for jatropha planting.
Global operations
The problems of climate change, energy security and poverty in developing nations are global and can only be addressed by solutions that match them in reach and vision.
D1 is a UK-based global producer of biodiesel. We are building a global supply chain and network that is sustainable and delivers value from "earth-to-engine”.
Our international business is presently focused on India, Southern Africa and South East Asia. We also have business operations in a number of emerging markets.
